Delayed Reaction: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

The Pitch: So, we're making a sequel. What museum is bigger than the New York one? No, I don't think we can get the Louvre. Going to Europe is more of a part 3 movie (see Madagascar, Rush Hour, etc.). How about the Smithsonian?

What Took Me So Long:This looked like even more of a rehash of the original than most sequels.

Why I Saw It: (Club 50) This movie follows a very simple formula. You have Ben Stiller and a bunch of people doing funny impersonations of historical figures. It's hard not so find a little bit to enjoy in that. Stiller is more of an outright hero this time around, as opposed to the everyman he was the first time around. There's still a seemingly endless supply of characters Owen Wilson as the cowboy, Steve Coogan as the Roman soldier, Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt...a bunch of others, and introducing Amy Adams (always a plus) as Amelia Earhart (every bit as good as Hilary Swank's) and Hank Azaria as, well, basically the voice to every animation and a Egyptian, I want to say, pharaoh. In short, a lot of characters to enjoy and any that don't work for you don't get enough time to sour the whole thing.

Why I Wish I Hadn't: My problem with a kids movie like this is that it tends to make me suspend my disbelief too much. Remember how the big deal with the first movie was to cause as little damage as possible and followed the Toy Story model of needing to be back in the right place by the time people came back? Yeah, that was completely abandoned. They pay a little lip service to it, very little, but building are being destroyed, statues are roaming the National Mall like it's nothing, and that seems to be completely fine by morning. This is one of the most blatant cases of making a sequel without an idea for a plot. The thinking apparently went as far as, "Well, the original made $250 million and we already got the go ahead to shoot in the Smithsonian for a while. Let's make a movie about anything".

Verdict (?): Weakly Don't Recommend
