The Pitch: You know Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and Spartacus? Imagine those in water.
What Took Me So Long: This movie has a lot of baggage.
Why I Saw It: (Club 50) The best this I can say about it is that it is better than its reputation would suggest. As you may know, it is considered a major box office flop after production costs ballooned after a storm destroyed the entire set (which isn't actually true. The movie did ok, even if it wasn't enough to recoup the costs). Because of that, it is renowned as the movie that spent all of Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves clout. It is a thorough production, for sure and aimed big with its concept and the world it created.
Why I Wish I Hadn't: The problem is that the final product is pretty unremarkable. There is a lot of overacting in this and a great deal of the action sequences play out in ways where you can see the mechanics of every decision. Simply put, this is one of those movies you expect to be better and it's not.
Verdict (?): Weakly Don't Recommend
