Movie Reaction: The To Do List

Formula: Female Superbad

Why I Saw It: The cast + the concept + being a comedy movie = something I want to see.

Cast: Where to begin...Ok, Aubrey Plaza. She carries this well. I wasn't sure if Safety Not Guaranteed was a fluke. Now I'm certain she can be a lead. She is funny and her unique timing adds a lot to this. Bill Hader is a great burnout mentor type. Alia Shawkat and Sarah Steele are entertaining as the best friends. It's so nice to see Rachel Bilson in a comedy like this. Frankly, I've never been sure why she's not been in more comedies or been more prolific in general. Oh, and a family of Connie Britton with Rachel Bilson and Aubrey Plaza as the daughters is one that I'd like to marry into. The cast is too big to keep going through. This is one of those "called in a lot of favors" cast lists.

Plot: A girl wants to lose her virginity before going to college and crazy things happen along the way. As I said, kind of similar to Superbad, only this is much raunchier. I think what works the most in its favor is also what prevented me from absolutely loving it, and that would be its bluntness. A lot of the humor comes from how matter of fact everything is. There's absolutely no beating around the bush. This can be really funny and all. Then there's other times, generally when it isn't trying to be funny when a little nuance could've been used rather than explicitly explaining the theme of the movie or the importance of a moment.

Elephant in the Room: Does she get through the To Do list? I don't want to spoil the movie or anything, but it's a long list and this is only about 100 minutes long. Plaza gets around in this and I love that the movie doesn't make judgments about that. It addresses how our actions have consequences but doesn't think less of characters for getting around. That is so rare especially for a movie starring a woman. It's refreshing.

To Sum Things Up:
This movie was very funny: a solid mix of punchlines, physical comedy, and raunch, which is fitting for a retro movie like this. Setting it in 1993 is an added touch which is almost necessary because it would be implausible for her not to know more of this stuff already thanks to the internet. I think the audience for this is rather limited, although if you fall in that category you'll probably enjoy it greatly.

Verdict (?): Weakly Recommend

DVR Purge 7/24-7/30

Still keeping myself busy with a lot of DVD rewatches and praying for the new contact to start back up. Soon, some shows will be coming out on DVD. That'll be nice. I can't deal with all this free time.

Past Purges

The Bridge "Rio"
I don't know why but don't know why, but it really bummed me out when Marco slept with Charlotte. Coupled with his wife meeting Sonya, I'm having flashes of suspicion, miscommunication and unneeded fallout that would be tedious as hell to deal with. Hopefully, this is all a red herring and this is all setup for something interesting. Regardless, everything else has been good. I especially enjoy the dynamic between Emily Rios and Matthew Lillard. Her argument for being a lesbian as her salvation was clever.

Burn Notice "Psychological Warfare"
I think we found Jeffrey Donovan's Emmy submission episode for next year. Kidding aside, that was impressive dramatic work for a show as generally "blue sky" as Burn Notice. Is that the first time we've seen Micheal's dad? It's been 7 years so maybe I forgot.

Wilfred "Intuition"
How long is Kristen Schaal hanging around for? In a small dose like we got this week, I wouldn't mind seeing her more. It was about time for another crazy-ass episode. It wasn't as mind-warping as other ones (quite frankly, I'm too lazy to look up the episode titles, but let's say any season finale or episode where someone else can see Wilfred rank as crazier). I expect we will ease back in to a more comic episode next week.

Movie Reaction: The Wolverine

Formula: X-Men Origins: Wolverine + Japan

Why I Saw It: I like the X-Men franchise in general and First Class had me hoping they got their act together.

Cast: Hugh Jackman is always great as Wolverine. I'm by no means a comic fan so I don't care about stuff like Wolverine needing to be shorter and all that other crap that people complain about. I'm starting to wonder home much longer he's going to be able to pull off this role though. He doesn't seem to be slipping yet. Of the main cast, he is absolutely the only actor I know. Tao Okamoto plays the woman he is trying to protect and Rila Fukushima is "his body guard" and both get a couple "every Japanese person knows karate" moments. Svetlana Khodchenkova is the only antagonistic mutant and little more. Hal Yamanouchi is the person who kickstarts the series of events as a response to Logan saving him in WWII. Famke Janssen's in it a lot but all as part of nightmares.

Plot: I'll say this much. The story in this one is far more focused than Origins. The plot points are what's you'd expect. There was a surprising lack of mutants in it, so much of the movie is demigod Wolverine kicking the ass of a lot of non-mutants which is a little boring. The big promise of the movie is that he has to do this without his ability to heal and that's done half-assed. He's still way more powerful than other people and seems to heal, only not nearly as quickly. As the kids say: that's weak sauce. As for Jean, it's been seven years since her and Wolverine were last in a movie together, so am I just forgetting a time when they were ever together? She was with Cyclops the whole time and had a sort of flirtatious thing going on with Logan. What I'm trying to say is why is she haunting his dreams so much?

Elephant in the Room: Does Wolverine really need another standalone movie? I know, right. I've heard that part of the reason for making this movie was to keep Jackman happy because he was interested in this storyline from the comics but this movie was missing something: more mutants. It's X-Men not X-Man.What makes the other movies work is the ensemble and the greater world struggles. The unrest over the treatment of mutants. The fear of them by non-mutants. The internal conflict of the mutants. This movie is far more internalized to Logan and his immortality, which is all and good had that not been covered in Origins.

To Sum Things Up:
The X-Men series is damned if they do, damned if they don't with me because I probably came away from previous ones saying "there's so many characters in this. I wish they would pick one and focus on him." I still say that could be fun to see, but this movie is so far removed that it is virtually of a different world entirely. I suppose this could be reverse-engineered in future movies like, coincidentally enough Tokyo Drift has been given context in the Fast & Furious series, but right now, this appears to be a completely disposable entry in the series. Not bad. Not exceptional. Just solid.

Movie Reaction: Fruitvale Station

Formula: The Wrestler + social injustice

Why I Saw It: I've heard great things about Michael B. Jordan's performance.

Cast: Michael B. Jordan is certainly the star of this tragic tale. He does a great job of showing Oscar Grant as both a sweet guy and one who has flaws that can get him in trouble. I'd be more than happy to see his name still floating around during award season. Melonie Diaz is solid and Octavia Spencer does a great job as his mother. I was very impressed by Ariana Neal, who plays Grant's daughter. She sold a lot of moment better than you'd assume a kid that young would. Also, Chad Michael Murray alert. Wasn't expecting to see him pop up.

Plot: It's basically following Oscar around for the day leading up to the unfortunate circumstances at Fruitvale Station, although it begins by showing a phone recording of the actual events, so it's not meant to be a secret what happens. The movie definitely paints a complete picture of his life, although it often can't help itself from painting Grant as a saint. That gets a little heavy-handed but it's sold well by Jordan and they certainly give him a lot of moments of rage and bullishness that makes it easy to see why he, say, had been to jail or lost his job. This is certainly a character study more than a plot-driven movie.

Elephant in the Room: How did they handle the events at Fruitvale Station? This is where I tell you that he gets shot. That's not a spoiler. Read the fucking news. Ok, the movie doesn't hide that Grant does something wrong. Certainly enough to be questioned by police ('questioned' being the key word). I fully believe there was no reason for him to have been shot and the police were using excessive force. The police in the movie, however, were cartoonishly bad. They could've toned that down some. Otherwise, I'd say it was pretty fair to what actually happened.

To Sum Things Up:
I wouldn't say this is the best movie I've seen all year or anything, It does have some of the best performances I've see though. Its release is fortuitously timely given the recent Zimmerman verdict and all. For that reason, I almost recommend waiting to see this so it can be appreciated for its own merits rather than as part of a larger discussion. I quite enjoyed it though.

Delayed Reaction: Ghostbusters II

The Pitch: Remember Ghostbusters?

What Took Me So Long: Full disclosure, I thought I'd seen this but the more I looked it up, the more I realized I actually hadn't. Otherwise, I'd've watched this years ago.

Why I Saw It: (Club 50) Ghostbusters is a comedy classic, one of those behemoth movies that dominated the pop culture landscape and is still iconic*. I'm always torn about sequels like this. On one hand, it always runs the risk of tarnishing the legacy of the first movie. On the other hand, Ghostbusters is ripe with franchise potential: characters that people love, timeless story, and limitless concept. That this movie couldn't match the heights of the first doesn't make it a disappointment. It is still pretty good. Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson play off each other well and watching this reminded me how much I'm missed Rick Moranis for the past decade plus.

*By the way, the top 12 of 1984, when Ghostbusters came out, in terms of pop culture, is about as strong as any year you are going to find.

Why I Wish I Hadn't: It's not that funny. This feels more like a sequel demanded by box office potential than having a solid story. It is by no means painful to watch, but it is obvious why it is not as revered as the original is.

Delayed Reaction: Shakespeare in Love

The Pitch: My name is Tom Stoppard and I have an idea for a movie about Shakespeare...what's that? Oh, you'll make it? Don't you need to know what it's about? No? Great.

What Took Me So Long: I am really tired of Shakespeare anything. Also, I had a hard time believing that it should've beat Life is Beautiful or Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture (I hold grudges).

Why I Saw It: (Club 50) But it did win best picture and it was a gap in what I'd seen from that list (Now it goes back to 1985. You're next Out of Africa). Then there's those people who still bemoan Judi Dench winning Best Supporting Actress despite very little screen time. Really, there was just a lot a needed to understand about this movie. What I learned is that if you take away the name Shakespeare (just call him Bill, instead), you have a forgettable romantic comedy. I actually like romantic comedies for what they are worth so I found the movie charming. Joseph Fiennes is as good as any Shakespeare I've seen. Gwyneth Paltrow is ok. The rest of the British legion including Captain Barbosa, Dr. Mierzwiak, and M are all having fun delivering Stoppard's lines, as they should.

Why I Wish I Hadn't: In a vacuum, I'd have no regrets watching this. Sadly, it is a winner of 7 Oscars including the big one, so I came in with some expectations and they were not met. I'd say that's not their fault, but no movie accidentally wins an Oscar.

Verdict (?): Weakly Recommend

Delayed Reaction: Another 48 HRS.

The Pitch: Remember 48 hrs.? Let's do that again.

What Took Me So Long: Because I haven't seen the first.

Why I Saw It: (Club 50) I opted for a pseudo-experiment when watching this. I haven't seen the original and wanted to see how inviting this one is on its own. I wasn't too lost by anything. Mostly, I had a hard time figuring out which stuff was new and which stuff was a continuation of the first. I'm guessing Murphy's character going to jail was something from the first. Was the Iceman? Or is that new? I do think Eddie Murphy works well with Nick Nolte. Nolte grounds Murphy appropriately.

Why I Wish I Hadn't: Well, I should've seen the first movie before this. That's obvious. I have to assume the original was really clever and/or funny because it did really well and, I figure, is what got Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop, because I didn't see anything special in this one.

Verdict (?): Weakly Don't Recommend

DVR Purge: 7/17-7/23

These are just sad. I need a fourth show. When does the new Whose Line start? I don't think that's a blogging kind of show.

Past Purges

The Bridge "Calaca"
It bothered me how similar Sonya picking up a guy in a bar was to Carrie doing it on Homeland, even though this one went much further. I think it's another sign of my fatigue over mentally unstable protagonists. I think that sums up my feelings overall so far: I'm waiting for what distinguishes this show. I'm fully intrigued and in no hurry to stop, but so far the most unique thing about it is how many subtitles there are. I can't wait to see how these side stories, like the creepy guy in the trailer, tie together though.

Burn Notice "All or Nothing"
Do we really need a new Michael romance this late in the game? Maybe we do and I'm being over-protective of what the show was, not where it is now, but at this point, I do not approve. I guess I like Sonya and she fits well with the others. I can't imagine her being around much longer though. We'll see.

Wilfred "Delusion"
Hehehe, Wilfred can't get that hat off. That got way more laughs from me than I assumed. I love the weird places they can go with the nature of Wilfred and Ryan's relationship. Wilfred's book for Jenna is laced with so many layers, whether it's to be seen as actually from Wilfred or from psychotic Ryan. I thought they'd be winding down the Ryan/Jenna coupling this season but it still keeps kicking, and let's be honest, it makes sense for him to get together with Wilfred's owner.

Club 50 Progress

As I said, since I'm wasting this much time tracking my progress on this project anyway, I might as well post it to keep me honest. Currently, I sitting at a little under 57% of the list (735/1300 to be exact). It's tougher gaining momentum on this thing than I expected when I first started it. I've been gaining on it a lot more recently, so this number should grow a lot as you see more delayed reactions popping up.

A couple things I'd like to note about the list:
1) Re-issues, even if I didn't see them in theaters, I'm counting as having seen if I've seen a version of it before since it would be impossible to see that in theaters now.
2) Having seen a movie and remembering it well are two very different things.
3) If anyone reading this has a higher tally, let me know. I'm curious, also, we should probably be friends
