Movie Reaction: The To Do List

Formula: Female Superbad

Why I Saw It: The cast + the concept + being a comedy movie = something I want to see.

Cast: Where to begin...Ok, Aubrey Plaza. She carries this well. I wasn't sure if Safety Not Guaranteed was a fluke. Now I'm certain she can be a lead. She is funny and her unique timing adds a lot to this. Bill Hader is a great burnout mentor type. Alia Shawkat and Sarah Steele are entertaining as the best friends. It's so nice to see Rachel Bilson in a comedy like this. Frankly, I've never been sure why she's not been in more comedies or been more prolific in general. Oh, and a family of Connie Britton with Rachel Bilson and Aubrey Plaza as the daughters is one that I'd like to marry into. The cast is too big to keep going through. This is one of those "called in a lot of favors" cast lists.

Plot: A girl wants to lose her virginity before going to college and crazy things happen along the way. As I said, kind of similar to Superbad, only this is much raunchier. I think what works the most in its favor is also what prevented me from absolutely loving it, and that would be its bluntness. A lot of the humor comes from how matter of fact everything is. There's absolutely no beating around the bush. This can be really funny and all. Then there's other times, generally when it isn't trying to be funny when a little nuance could've been used rather than explicitly explaining the theme of the movie or the importance of a moment.

Elephant in the Room: Does she get through the To Do list? I don't want to spoil the movie or anything, but it's a long list and this is only about 100 minutes long. Plaza gets around in this and I love that the movie doesn't make judgments about that. It addresses how our actions have consequences but doesn't think less of characters for getting around. That is so rare especially for a movie starring a woman. It's refreshing.

To Sum Things Up:
This movie was very funny: a solid mix of punchlines, physical comedy, and raunch, which is fitting for a retro movie like this. Setting it in 1993 is an added touch which is almost necessary because it would be implausible for her not to know more of this stuff already thanks to the internet. I think the audience for this is rather limited, although if you fall in that category you'll probably enjoy it greatly.

Verdict (?): Weakly Recommend
