The Pitch: Remember how we used to love Dragnet? Let's laugh at that.
What Took Me So Long: I never looked at the cast of this and assumed it was more of a drama.
Why I Saw It: (Club 50) Dan Aykroyd playing the iconic Joe Friday as the straight man. Tom Hanks being the young gun. Christopher Plummer, the corrupt reverend. What's not to love? I'm surprised that more people don't cry foul about The Naked Gun ripping off Dragnet, because the two feel incredibly similar, the former working impressively to one-up the latter. Along with the comedy, there's a lot of solid buddy-cop work, which makes sense. Hanks is a notoriously enjoyable co-star in anything and Aykroyd was built for this role.
Why I Wish I Hadn't: Some of the jokes are comically dated. I love that they make a point to mention that the "porn kingpin" is only about softcore stuff, for example. As with most movies of its ilk, it's very front loaded with jokes and the third act is mostly action that lost my interest much too easily.
Verdict (?): Weakly Recommend
