The Creative Arts Emmys will be handed out in the next
couple days. I'll be coming out with my main ceremony in-depth predictions
shortly. I'd like to make a few predictions for the Creative Arts Emmys now.
(Note: There are a few categories that are sometimes in
the main ceremony and other times handed out during the CA Emmys. I'm just
going to cover all these in-question categories now and whichever ones are
actually announced during the main ceremony will get a more in-depth analysis
leading up to that)

Portlandia (IFC)Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Will Win: Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Could Win: Documentary Now! (IFC)
Should Win: Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Inside Amy Schumer and Key & Peele are out of the way. SNL had a big rebound season. There's no reason to suspect it won't win. If I had to pick a runner-up, Documentary Now! is an ambitious series, and I've heard enough a few mentions of the Jiro Dreams of Sushi episode.
Outstanding Variety Talk Series

Could Win: Carpool Karaoke Primetime

Should Win: Louis C.K. 2017 (It's the
only one of these I saw, but it wasn't his best)
Stand-Up specials almost never win.
One Man Shows occasionally do, but not since Chris Rock: Bring the
Pain in 1996 has a stand-up special actually won. So, Sarah Silverman's
2014 nomination and Louis C.K.'s 2013 and 2015 nomination in this category
don't count for much. Carpool Karaoke was a somewhat surprising winner
last year over the likes of Lemonade, Adele, and the Kennedy Center
Honors, so I have to acknowledge its chance to repeat. Looking at the
nominations throughout the Emmy categories though, I'd be a fool to not
recognize the anti-Trump sentiment, which makes the Full Frontal special
very likely to come away with this.

Should Win: Not The White House
Correspondent s' Dinner
This category loves musical performances and live shows like Grease Live!
or Olympic Opening Ceremonies that have a high degree of difficulty.
That makes Tony Bennett Celebrates 90 the most likely winner. I suspect
that Samantha Bee or Stephen Colbert will steamroll through these
categories though, and of the two, Bee's indignance seems more likely to carry
her through. Oh, and nice try Oscars. We haven't forgotten about that
Best Picture fiasco.

70th Annual Tony Awards

Should Win: Louis C.K. 2017
Three of the last five wins went to a Louis C.K. standup special. One of
those other five wins went to a Sarah Silverman special. The remaining one went
to another standup special. Again, I think that Bee is lurking, but I
need more evidence that this award will go another way before I change my
methodology. Stand-up wins this.
Outstanding Directing - Variety Series
Drunk History - "Hamilton"
Jimmy Kimmel Live - "The (RED) Show"
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver - "Multi-Level Marketing"
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert - "Episode 0179"

Could Win: Last Week Tonight With

Should Win: Saturday Night Live -
"Host : Jimmy Fallon"
Even when the show doesn't have any heat, SNL is still the show to
beat here. It won 2010-2014. Now that the Trump administration has upped the
show's popularity, it looks unstoppable. If this somehow doesn't go to SNL,
something sturdy like Last Week Tonight sounds like a good alternative.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
Saturday Night Live

Could Win: Full Frontal With Samantha
Bee
Should Win: Last Week Tonight With
John Oliver
This went back and fourth between The Daily Show and The Colbert
Report for a lot of years until it went to Last Week Tonight for the
first time last year. The question now is if that was year 1 of a dominant run
or if some other show, most likely Full Frontal, is a formidable enough rival. SNL's
heat could extend as far as the writing category, but it hasn't won since 2002
and 1989 before that. So, that seems unlikely. Really, there no bad option
here. I'd be happy to see any of them win.
Outstanding Structured Reality Program
Antiques Roadshow
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
Fixer Upper
Lip Sync Battle
Shark Tank
Who Do You Think You Are?
Will Win: Shark Tank
Could Win: Diners, Drive-Ins and
Dives
Should Win: Antiques Roadshow
Fixer Upper is getting its first
nomination despite being on for several seasons. Lip Sync Battle has
been nominated for each of its two seasons. Who Do You Think You Are has
sporadically been nominated (2012 & 2014). Antiques Roadshow is the
Angela Lansbury of the 2000s having been nominated every year since 2005 (2002 &
2003 as well) without ever winning. There's a chance this will be the year that
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives will finally win. It's been nominated since
2013. Reality Program made its Structured and Unstructured split in 2014 and Shark
Tank has won every year since that split occurred.
Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program
Born This Way
Deadliest Catch
Gaycation With Ellen Page
Intervention
RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked
United Shades Of America With W. Kamau Bell
Will Win: Born This Way
Could Win: Deadliest Catch
Should Win: Gaycation With Ellen Page
There's a good case for every show. Drag Race: Untucked could win on
its way to winning for Reality Competition as well. Gaycation has been
nominated for both of its seasons and has a fantastic name. United Shades
taps into the zeitgeist well. Intervention returns to the field after
winning for Reality Program in 2009 and being nominated in 2008. That's a long
hiatus though. Deadliest Catch has wins in 2011, 2014, and 2015 as well
as several other nominations. Born This Way won last year for its first
season. A repeat seems likely.
Outstanding Host - Reality or Competition
Program
Martha Stewart & Snoop Dogg (Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party)
Gordon Ramsay
Alec Baldwin
Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn (Project Runway)
RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's Drag Race)
W. Kamau Bell
Will Win: RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's Drag Race)
Could Win: Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn
(Project Runway)
Should Win: RuPaul Charles (RuPaul's
Drag Race)
Gordon Ramsay has somehow not been nominated for any series before this
year, which makes this a bit fluke-y. Martha Stewart & Snoop Dogg, W. Kamau
Bell, and Alec Baldwin are all nominated for the first seasons of their shows.
I'd kind of love to see Matha & Snoop get a win, just for a laugh. Klum
and/or Gunn have been nominated from 2008-09 and 2013-present with a lone win
in 2013. RuPaul finally broke though with a nomination and win last year making
him the front runner this year as well.
Archer - "Archer Dreamland: No Good Deed"
Bob's Burgers - "Bob, Actually"
Elena And The Secret Of Avalor (Sofia The First )
The Simpsons - "The Town"
South Park - "Member Berries"
Will Win: Bob's Burgers - "Bob, Actually"
Could Win: Elena And The Secret Of
Avalor (Sofia The First )
Should Win: Bob's Burgers -
"Bob, Actually"
This is one of the more entrenched Emmy categories. The Simpsons has
25 nominations over the years with 10 wins. The most recent win was back in
2008 though. Similarly, South Park has 16 nominations and 5 wins, the
most recent being in 2013. Archer managed to win last year for the first
time on its third nomination. I like Elena and The Secret of Avalor as a
dark horse pick since every couple years a program that's more aimed at
children pulls off a surprise win. I like Bob's Burgers to win because
it has been nominated every year since 2014 and even won in 2014.
Outstanding Short Form Animated Program
Adventure Time - "Islands Part 4: Imaginary Resources"
Disney Mickey Mouse - "Split Decisions"
Marvel's Rocket & Groot - "Space Walk"
Steven Universe - "Mr. Greg"
Teen Titans Go! - "Orangins"
Will Win: Adventure Time - "Islands Part 4:
Imaginary Resources"
Could Win: Disney Mickey Mouse -
"Split Decisions"
Should Win: Adventure Time -
"Islands Part 4: Imaginary Resources"
I guess Rocket & Groot, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven
Universe stand a chance. As I see it, this is between Mickey Mouse
and Adventure Time though. Mickey Mouse won in 2013 and 2014 and was
nominated in 2015. Adventure Time has been consecutively nominated since
2010, including a 2015 win.
Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance
Dee Bradley Baker (American Dad! - "Fight And Flight")
Kevin Kline (Bob's Burgers - "The Last Gingerbread House On The
Left")
Kristen Schaal (BoJack Horseman - "That 's Too Much, Man!")
Mo Collins (F Is For Family - "Pray Away")
Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy - "The Boys In The Band")
Nancy Cartwright (The Simpsons - "Looking For Mr. Goodbart")
Will Win: Nancy Cartwright (The Simpsons -
"Looking For Mr. Goodbart")
Could Win: Seth MacFarlane (Family
Guy - "The Boys In The Band")
Should Win: Seth MacFarlane (Family
Guy - "The Boys In The Band")
This is a pretty new category. The only consistent
nominee is Seth MacFarlane, who even won last year. This is everyone else's
first nomination. It's surprising to see so many non-regulars on their series
(Kristen Schaal, Kevin Kline) nominated.
Outstanding Outstanding Children's Program
Girl Meets World
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 90th Celebration
Once Upon A Sesame Street Christmas
School Of Rock
Star Wars Rebels
Will Win: Once Upon A Sesame Street Christmas
Could Win: Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade 90th Celebration
Should Win: Girl Meets World
The fact that Nick News was so dominant for so long means they
really don't take this category seriously. Because of that, I'm tempted for
pick the Macy's Parade. Other than, for some reason, Wizards of
Waverly Place back in the day, this doesn't go to the Disney Channel/Nickelodeon
types very often, so I don't feel great about Girl Meets World, School
of Rock, or Star Wars Rebels. Sesame Street only has 15
nominations over the years, which is a little surprising when you consider how
long it's been on. It had a win as recently as 2012.
Brown Girls
Fear The Walking Dead: Passage (2N)
Hack Into Broad City (2N)
Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training
Marvel's Agent s of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot
Will Win: Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training
Could Win: Brown Girls
Should Win: Los Pollos Hermanos
Employee Training
The category was just created last year and, so far, it's just a way to
nominate web extras for other series. I kind of like the Better Call Saul
tie-in out of the options.
Outstanding Short Form Variety Series
Behind The Voice
The Daily Show - Between The Scenes
Honest Trailers
Epic Rap Battles of History
The Star Wars Show
Will Win: Epic Rap Battles of History
Could Win: Honest Trailers
Should Win: Epic Rap Battles of
History
Another new category from last year and last year's winner isn't nominated.
Honest Trailers and Epic Rap Battles of History are the only
repeat nominees, so I'm considering them the front runners.
Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series
Creating Saturday Night Live
FEUD: Bette And Joan: Inside Look
Jay Leno's Garage
National Endowment For The Arts: United States Of Arts
Viceland At The Women’s March
Will Win: Viceland At The Women’s March
Could Win: FEUD: Bette And Joan:
Inside Look
Should Win: Viceland At The Women’s
March
This has existed in a few forms over the years. Jay Leno's Garage
has a bunch of nominations and a win back in 2011. An "inside look"
won last year, which means FEUD has a shot. I kind of think Viceland
hits a zeitgeist sweet spot.
Outstanding Actor - Short Form Series
Ty Burrell (Boondoggle)
Alan Tudyk (Con Man)
Kim Estes (Dicks)
Ben Schwartz (The Earliest Show)
Jason Ritter (Tales Of Titans)
John Michael Higgins (Tween Fest)
Will Win: Ty Burrell (Boondoggle)
Could Win: Alan Tudyk (Con Man)
Should Win: John Michael Higgins
(Tween Fest)
Also created in 2016 win no repeat nominees. I'm curious to see where this
goes.
Mindy Sterling (Con Man)
Jane Lynch (Dropping The Soap)
Lauren Lapkus (The Earliest Show)
Kelsey Scott (Fear The Walking Dead: Passage)
Mindy Sterling (secs & EXECS)
Will Win: Jane Lynch (Dropping The Soap)
Could Win: Lauren Lapkus (The Earliest
Show)
Should Win: Jane Lynch (Dropping The
Soap)
A surprising amount of legends being nominated.
Outstanding Guest Actress - Comedy Series
Wanda Sykes (black-ish - "Lemons")
Carrie Fisher (Catastrophe - "Episode 6")
Becky Ann Baker (Girls - "Gummies")
Angela Bassett (Master Of None - "Thanksgiving")
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Kristen Wiig")
Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Melissa
McCarthy")
Will Win: Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live -
"Host : Melissa McCarthy")
Could Win: Carrie Fisher
(Catastrophe - "Episode 6")
Should Win: Melissa McCarthy (Saturday
Night Live - "Host : Melissa McCarthy")
It's hard to predict which way the guest acting categories will go. Due to
the popularity of McCarthy's Sean Spicer, she seems like the obvious front runner. Carrie Fisher could get some posthumous love. Only Wanda Sykes'
barely there role on black-ish would be a bad win among these choices.
Outstanding Guest Actor - Comedy Series
Riz Ahmed (Girls - "All I Ever Wanted")
Matthew Rhys (Girls - "American Bitch")
Dave Chappelle (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Dave Chappelle")
Lin-Manuel Miranda (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Lin-Manuel
Miranda")
Tom Hanks (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Tom Hanks")
Hugh Laurie (Veep - "Blurb")
Will Win: Lin-Manuel Miranda (Saturday Night Live -
"Host : Lin-Manuel Miranda")
Could Win: Matthew Rhys (Girls -
"American Bitch")
Should Win: Tom Hanks (Saturday Night
Live - "Host : Tom Hanks")
Again, it's a hard category to predict. Last year, Peter Scolari went from
being a last minute replacement to the winner. The last couple years have gone
to more dramatic roles and before that, there was a run of SNL hosts who
won. Given the number of hosts nominated and its resurgent popularity, an SNL
winner seems likely. While I think Tom Hanks was by far the best, a mix of the
world taking him for granted and overall love of Hamilton has me leaning
toward Miranda. Otherwise, Matthew Rhys had a very talked-about episode of Girls.
Outstanding Guest Actress - Drama Series
Alison Wright (The Americans - "The Soviet Division")
Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid's Tale - "Late")
Cicely Tyson (How To Get Away With Murder - "Go Cry Somewhere
Else")
Ann Dowd (The Leftovers - "The Most Powerful Man In The World (And His
Identical Twin Brother)")
Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black - "Doctor Psycho")
Shannon Purser (Stranger Things - "Chapter Three: Holly, Jolly")
Will Win: Cicely Tyson (How To Get Away With Murder -
"Go Cry Somewhere Else")
Could Win: Ann Dowd (The Leftovers -
"The Most Powerful Man In The World (And His Ident ical Twin
Brother)")
Should Win: Alexis Bledel (The
Handmaid's Tale - "Late")
Margo Martindale winning the last two years for barely doing anything on The
Americans means no logic can be applied to this award. Because of that,
Cicely Tyson, a former Emmy winner with a bunch of nominations, seems like a
decent pick. After that, I suspect that voters might just confuse Martindale
and Dowd, so that might work in Dowd's favor. I'd love it if Alexis Bledel gets
attention for a really impressive turn in The Handmaid's Tale.
Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline - "Part 32")
BD Wong (Mr. Robot - "eps2.3_logic-b0mb.hc")
Hank Azaria (Ray Donovan - "Norman Saves The World")
Denis O'Hare (This Is Us - "Last Christmas")
Brian Tyree Henry (This Is Us - "Memphis")
Gerald McRaney (This Is Us - "The Big Day")
Will Win: Gerald McRaney (This Is Us - "The Big
Day")
Could Win: Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline
- "Part 32")
Should Win: Gerald McRaney (This Is
Us - "The Big Day")
This really feels like McRaney's to lose. Hank Azaria won last year, but
the category isn't known for repeat winners. Mendolsohn won for Supporting
Actor last year and was nominated the last two years in that category. So, it
wouldn't be crazy to see him get this either.
Outstanding Casting - Comedy Series
Master Of None
Silicon Valley
Transparent
Veep
Will Win: Veep
Could Win: Atlanta
Should Win: Veep
Veep has won the last two years. 30 Rock
is the only show to win this award three times and those weren't all
consecutive. Granted, the casting award only goes back to 2000. I'm sticking
with Veep until I'm proven wrong. That said, voters love to pick shows
in their first season for this (Orange is the New Black - 2014, Girls
- 2012, Modern Family - 2010, Ugly Betty - 2007... You get the
idea. 8/17 winners were in their first season.). The only series eligible under
that description would be Atlanta.
Outstanding Casting - Drama Series
The Crown
The Handmaid's Tale
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld
Will Win: Westworld
Could Win: Stranger Things
Should Win: The Handmaid's Tale
Remember how I mentioned the Emmys' "new series" fetish for the
casting awards? Well, this year has five freshman series nominated. That makes
this almost impossible to predict. The last three wins have gone to HBO series
(True Detective - 2014, Game of Thrones 2015 & 2016). Wins
for House of Cards (2013) and Boardwalk Empire (2011) are also a
reminder that the Emmy voters are often
swayed by the series with the most famous names. That makes Westworld
a natural pick to win. Otherwise, Stranger Things is such a unique
nominee, that I think it stands a chance. This can go absolutely any direction
though.
Outstanding Casting - Limited Series, Movie, Or Special
Big Little Lies
Fargo
FEUD: Bette And Joan
The Night Of
The Wizard Of Lies
Will Win: Big Little Lies
Could Win: FEUD: Bette And Joan
Should Win: Big Little Lies
As I've mentioned before and will many again many times, the Limited Series categories have become exponentially more difficult since the category exploded
in the last few years. Like in Drama, Emmy voters normally chase the biggest
names. FEUD has the most Oscar winners and nominees attached to it, but Big
Little Lies has legitimate A-listers. It's hard to see this going to any
other show.
Angie Tribeca
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Saturday Night Live
Shameless
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Will Win: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Could Win: Shameless
Should Win: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Brooklyn Nine Nine won the award
in 2014 & 2015. Shameless won in 2016. None of these shows are known
for their stunts, so that's as good a guide as you'll find.
Outstanding Stunt Coordination - Drama or Limited Series
The Blacklist
Blindspot
Gotham
MacGyver
Marvel's Luke Cage
Will Win: The Blacklist
Could Win: MacGyver
Should Win: Marvel's Luke Cage
The lack of Game of Thrones this year has made everything more
difficult to predict. GoT won the last two years. The Marvel and DC
shows have trouble even getting nominated, so I'm hesitant to pick Gotham
or Luke Cage. The Blacklist is a previous winner (2014). I feel
like one of these network procedurals is going to get a very boring win.
Outstanding Main Title Design
American Gods
The Crown
FEUD: Bette And Joan
Stranger Things
Westworld
Will Win: Stranger Things
Could Win: FEUD: Bette And Joan
Should Win: Stranger Things
That Stranger Things opening is so damn evocative of the 80s books and movies that influenced it that I
have to think it's the frontrunner. Otherwise, the FEUD opening is a lot
of fun.
Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics
"We Tapped That Ass" (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - "When Will Josh
And His Friend Leave Me Alone?")
"Jing-A-Ling-A-Ling" (Duck The Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas
Special)
"The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)" (Jimmy Kimmel Live -
"Jessica Chastain/Willie Nelson/Hunter Hayes")
"Last Christmas" (Saturday Night Live - "Host : Casey
Affleck")
"Letter To The Free" (13th)
"Hell No" (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - "Kimmy’s Roommate
Lemonades!")
Will Win: "Letter To The Free"
Could Win: "We Tapped That
Ass"
Should Win: "Last Christmas"
SNL has a couple semi-recent wins (2011, 2007),
but both of those were Justin Timberlake-related. Jimmy Kimmel Show won
back in the day for "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" (2008). Crazy
Ex-Girlfriend really should be in consideration for how much music is in
the show. I'm going with the song from the Ana Duvernay documentary, 13th,
because I don't think that last year's win for "Til It Happens to You"
from another documentary (The Hunting Ground) was a fluke.
FEUD: Bette And Joan
Genius
The Good Fight
Stranger Things
Victoria (Masterpiece)
Westworld
Will Win: Stranger Things
Could Win: The Good Fight
Should Win: Stranger Things
Similar to the opening credits award, Stranger Things got so much
praise for its opening music that it feels like a lock. This is such a blind
guess though, that I really am making a blind guess for my Could Win.
Outstanding Narrator
Meryl Streep (Five Came Back - "The Price Of Victory")
Liev Schreiber (Muhammad Ali: Only One)
Liev Schreiber (UConn: The March To Madness - "Episode 1")
Sam Neill (Wild New Zealand)
Ewan McGregor (Wild Scotland)
Laurence Fishburne (Year Million - "Homo Sapien 2.0")
Will Win: Laurence Fishburne
Could Win: Meryl Streep
Should Win: Laurence Fishburne
Keith David winning last year was obvious, because he's an iconic narrator.
I have to assume that the Liev Schrieber double nomination is going to cancel
him out. Laurence Fishburne is a really solid narrator, but there is a chance
that voters could pick Meryl Streep just to see if she'll show up to accept
(I'm betting she won't).
Outstanding Special Class Program
Hairspray Live!
The Oscars
Super Bowl LI Halftime Show Starring Lady Gaga
70th Annual Tony Awards
Will Win: 70th Annual Tony Awards
Could Win: Hairspray Live!
Should Win: Hairspray Live!
The category has shape shifted some in the past. Here's the story recently
though. Last year, a live musical (Grease: Live) won. That puts Hairspray
Live! in contention. The Tonys have been nominated every year since
2009* with wins from 2010 to 2014. I don't see the Oscars winning after
the Best Picture fiasco and Superbowl Halftime shows don't have a
history of winning.
*Before 2009 is when some of the shape shifting of the category makes it
hard to draw parallels.
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Online

Amigo To The Rescue: Disney Junior Interactive Show
HITRECORD x ACLU: Are You There Democracy? It 's Me, The Internet
Mission: ISS
The People's House - Inside The White House With Barack And Michelle Obama
Will Win: Mission: ISS
Could Win: The People's House -
Inside The White House With Barack And Michelle Obama
Should Win: Mission: ISS
The interactive program categories change every year so I have no
information to build off. The Late Late Show did win a version of the
award last year.
Outstanding Informational Series Or Special
Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown
Inside The Actors Studio
Leah Remini: Scientology And The Aftermath
StarTalk With Neil deGrasse Tyson
Vice
Will Win: Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown
Could Win: Vice
Should Win: Vice
This was combined with the Nonfiction Program award before 2013, so there's
not too much information to go off. Here's what I do know. There's not a lot of
turnover. Vice won in 2014 and was nominated in every year since. Inside
the Actors Studio won in 2013 and has been nominated every year since. This
is Star Talk's third nomination without a win yet. What's most important
to note is that Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown has won or shared a win
the last four years.
Outstanding Directing - Nonfiction Program
Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher And Debbie Reynolds
O.J.: Made In America - "Part 3"
Planet Earth II - "Cities"
Planet Earth II - "Islands"
13th
Will Win: O.J.: Made In America - "Part 3"
Could Win: 13th
Should Win: O.J.: Made In America -
"Part 3"
I assume the Planet Earth episodes cancel each other out in the
voting. While there's always a chance that Bright Lights could win as
the sentimental favorite, given Fisher and Reynolds' deaths, this is really
between OJ and 13th. I look at OJ as an unstoppable
monolith.
Outstanding Writing - Nonfiction Program
Amanda Knox
Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown - "Houston"
The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years
Bill Nye Saves The World - "The Sexual Spectrum"
13th
Will Win: 13th
Could Win: The Beatles: Eight Days A
Week - The Touring Years
Should Win: 13th
OJ: Made in America is oddly
missing, which really clears the way for 13th.
Amanda Knox
The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years
A House Divided (Vice Special Report)
L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later
13th
Will Win: 13th
Could Win: L.A. Burning: The Riots
25 Years Later
Should Win: 13th
All the nonfiction and documentary series and special splits means that a
lot of good documentaries aren't getting blocked by OJ: Made in America.
These are some good nominees. I'm tempted to go with the L.A. Riot documentary,
but 13th has too much pedigree to ignore.
Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series
American Masters
Chef's Table
The Keepers
Planet Earth II
30 For 30
Will Win: American Masters
Could Win: Planet Earth II
Should Win: The Keepers
True crime has been hot recently with The Jinx and Making a
Murderer winning the last two years. That means The Keepers stands a
good chance, although it doesn't carry the same amount of buzz. 30 for 30
has only been nominated once before (2011) and it didn't win then. This is Chef's
Table's 2nd nomination in a row, which doesn't mean nothing. The first Planet
Earth won back in 2007. American Masters is the institution with 10
wins and 17 nominations since 1999.
Exceptional Merit In Documentary Filmmaking
Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher And Debbie Reynolds
LA 92
O.J.: Made In America
Oklahoma City (American Experience)
The White Helmets
Will Win: O.J.: Made In America
Could Win: Bright Lights: Starring
Carrie Fisher And Debbie Reynolds
Should Win: O.J.: Made In America
It's
worth noting that The White Helmets won the Oscar for documentary short.
The death of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds makes Bright Lights a bit
of a wildcard. It would be shocking to see OJ lose this though.
