Quick Reaction: Splash

Honestly, the only thing I want to even talk about is the fact that this movie actually inspired the Disney Parks ride Splash Mountain. From what I understand, it really is as dumb as you'd think. The reason this Song of the South-inspired ride is called "Splash" Mountain is to reference this movie. And that's the only way it references the movie. What can I say. Michael Eisner was weird.

My thoughts on the movie itself are pretty basic. It's basically the "proof of concept" hit that set up Tom Hanks and Ron Howard's careers for the next several decades (Hanks as a star, Howard as a director). The movie is sweet and weird. It has a lot of fun with the idea of Darryl Hannah as a mermaid. It actively avoids overthinking anything and always opts for an easy answer rather than a sensible answer to any questions you have about the premise. That's fine, because it's a silly RomCom. Hanks and Hannah have good chemistry. Except for some John Candy bits, it ages pretty well. I liked it.

Verdict: Weakly Recommend
