Delayed Reaction: The Ritual

The Pitch: Imagine if the Blair Witch filmmakers tried to make Midsommar.

Four friends go on a trip to Sweden and get lost in the forest where a creature tries to kill them.

I'm sure the people who made this movie were pissed off when they found out about Midsommar. The two movies have a similar setting, both have a theme about loss and regret, and end up being about religious fanatics. However, Midsommar realized that bright daylight is much scarier than damp darkness. And, Midsommar had Florence Pugh. Rafe Spall is fine, but I'd much rather have Pugh for a horror movie.

The Ritual is a collection of familiar horror elements not repackaged well enough to separate itself much. Friends getting slowly picked off has been done countless times. Same with getting lost in the woods. Even the pagan ritual stuff is overly familiar.

It's not a bad movie. It's fine. The four guys in the main cast are good. They do a great job coming off as four longtime friends. They have the right chemistry for that. When we finally see the creature that's stalking them, it is appropriately scary looking. There are just too many similar movies that rank ahead of it.

Verdict: Weakly Don't Recommend
