Not a lot to say about this one. It gave me a lot of Wind River vibes with the relative lawlessness and cold weather. If nothing else, I’m thankful of Westworld for bringing this badass phase of Thandiwe Newton’s career. She’s always dabbled in it with the occasional Mission Impossible II or Rocknrolla, but Westworld is really the first time she seemed tough. I think she’s in the Ethan Hawke/Jude Law group of actors who unlocked something when they got some lines of their face. Now she gets cast as the alcoholic sidekick in Reminiscence or the grizzled former detective-now-professor in God’s Country. This movie is a nice story of escalating acts, starting with the simple act of parking on someone’s property and snowballing to much more extreme events. I do think mixing in Hurricane Katrina was taking on a little too much, but that never took attention away from Newton. It’s her movie and she leads it well.
Verdict: Weakly Recommend
