Delayed Reaction: Plus One

Premise: Two friends decide to be each other's wingman for a year of weddings and come to realize that they are actually a couple.

I've been beating this drum for a while, but RomComs never died. They just changed in scale and tone. There are plenty of good RomComs out there still being made. They just don't star Julia Roberts or her modern equivalent (Anna Kendrick?). Plus One is a perfect example of this. It's got all the things a good RomCom needs: clear premise, attractive leads, consistent comic sensibility. It even looks like a real movie. They shot on location and look like they even got permits to do it. You don't feel any budgetary constraints, which is all I ask for. The stars of the movie (Maya Erskine, Jack Quaid) are familiar if not "famous". I really don't think the RomCom formula is that hard. The people making one just need to try.

Plus One is exactly the story you think it's going to be. It's clear from the first minute that Erskine and Quaid are ending up together, so the movie is about the journey. Erskine has fun being a little raunchy. Quaid is a nice guy who needs to realize that he actually kind of sucks. The movie has a fun spine with all the weddings. The story beats feel earned. I like how they actually end up together pretty early. We get to enjoy them as a couple for a while, so I can root for them dating as more than an abstract concept.

There's nothing special about Plus One. It's just well executed. I don't need more than that.

Verdict: Strongly Recommend
