The Pitch: Tatiana Maslany plays only one character.
This feels exactly like a Cannes movie from Canada. It's undeniably Canadian. I mean, no one is chilling at a poutine bar, guzzling down maple syrup, but it isn't far off. Just the mix of snowmobiles, casual French, and Canadian treasure Tatiana Masalany never let me forget where this was taking place. I'll go ahead and admit that I either missed the point of a lot of this movie or didn't find what it was saying to be all that interesting.
This is the movie as I see it. A girl and a guy are happily together in a secluded ice town. The girl transfers away because someone is following her. The guy talks to a bear (You read that right). The guy tries to kill himself because she's leaving. The girl spends all her money to have sex with him in rehab. They go on a cross country snowmobile journey. He nearly dies falling into an ice crevice. They hide from a blizzard in a long abandoned military base. We find out her stalker is her abusive father. She thinks he's found them at the base. We realize that it's all in her head and the guys knows it. The guy burns down the military base to prove that she isn't being followed. He talks to a bear again in front of her. They get found later, frozen to death.
These only loosely fit together to make a cohesive thematic point. This might actually be brilliant, but I missed the brilliance.Regardless, it's nice to see Tatiana Maslany. Dane Dehaan is good and intense. I just wish I knew what to make of the rest of it.
Verdict (?): Weakly Don't Recommend
