The Pitch: How
mean can we be to Brittany Snow?
A millionaire invites several desperate people to compete for a rich prize by doing awful things to each other.
I watched this and Truth or Dare back-to-back one night, not realizing that I'd just signed on for a lot of people doing really awful things to each other, verging on torture porn. Frankly, I watched this because I like Brittany Snow and I thought Sasha Grey was a natural fit for a horror movie.
I didn't like this movie, just like I didn't like Cheap Thrills. People doing awful things for money isn't something I find entertaining. Hell, that's why I didn't watch the show Fear Factor either. I think Circle is the closest I've gotten to liking something of this ilk, and that's because the victims weren't in the same room as whoever was killing them. I like the idea of a bunch of characters trapped in an impossible situation trying to survive. That's why I don't mind the original Saw that much either. Would Your Rather is pure sadism. It's watching a villain get off on making people commit heinous acts. It would maybe be interesting if Snow and the others could leave at any time. At least then it has something to say about what desperation makes someone do. This movie literally puts guns to their heads. The lack of agency is what separates horror from sadism.
This has a strong cast and they all play their parts well. The 2012 release lines up well with the "fuck rich people" ethos post Great Recession. I get why someone would make this movie, but I hope I never have to see another one like it.
Verdict: Strongly Don't Recommend
