A girl keeps reliving the same day that always ends with her being killed until she can figure out how not to die.
If you walk into any room with enough confidence, people won't ask a lot of questions. It's true in life and it's true in movies. Happy Death Day is a concept that's riddled with plot holes. Put under any scrutiny, it makes no sense. Even after making the leap to accept that Jessica Rothe is able to keep reliving the same day, it's entirely implausible that it takes her so long to figure out a way to live past that day or that the same psychopath is as skilled a tracker as the movie needs him to be.
But, the movie knows exactly what it is. It bulldozes past the obvious issues with its premise and execution of it, and manages to make a decently enjoyable PG-13 studio horror movie. Rothe is a likable lead character (let's ignore that she's nearly a decade too old for the role...just like everyone else in the movie). The movie edits together the repetitive events with enough times to recognize them but not enough times to become tedious.
I like my straight horror to have a lot more dread, and I like my horror comedy to deconstruct the genre a little more, so my enjoyment of Happy Death Day was capped. It approaches the idea with a ton of confidence and is the best version of the movie it could be. I can't ask for much more than that.
Verdict: Weakly Recommend
