I see two ways to look at TXH1138. One is to say it’s a shame that Star Wars eclipsed it and prevented George Lucas from ever stretching his creative muscles again beyond the one franchise. The other is to say that THX1138 is only remembered because of Star Wars. I lean toward the latter. It’s a fine movie. It fits in with most dystopias of the time like Logan’s Run and A Clockwork Orange. The visuals are quite striking and it’s a role that I don’t typically see Robert Duvall taking.
This is such a precursor to Star Wars though. It’s hard to watch this without thinking that he would then make Star Wars. The visuals are similar. The ode to Buck Rogers at the beginning made me recall all the times Lucas has mentioned that as an inspiration for Star Wars. This is a much more adult movie, but otherwise much is the same. It’s certainly fun to watch this with Star Wars in mind. Otherwise, it’s an ok version of this kind of movie. It’s short though. I like short.
Verdict: Weakly Don’t Recommend
