This is a nice movie that I don't have a lot to say about. It's the story of a Maltese fisherman name Jesmark (Jesmark Scicluna) who has yet another setback when his boat gets a leak. He takes on work on a friend's boat while trying to make ends meet for his girlfriend and newborn baby. It's not enough though. He gets tied in some with the world of illegal fishing and selling. Eventually, he faces a crossroads about what's best for his future. Does he continue fishing like his family has done for generations? Does he sell back his license and boat to start a new career? Or does he continue to balance his checkbook by taking on risky illegal jobs?
The movie is a brisk 90 minutes and change. Scicluna is quite good in the lead role and doesn't talk scenes to death. I'll fully admit that I need more knowledge of the fishing industry to really know what's going on some of the time. Apparently, it's illegal to sell certain fish at different times of the year. I'm still not sure what's risky about "cleaning a fish". Perhaps I just wasn't paying close enough attention to the movie at certain points. I do have trouble with subtitles in wonky films like this that need to explain a number of things. Overall though, this is a really good movie about when romantic ideals clash with harsh reality and how to cope with changing your perception of yourself.
Verdict: Weakly Recommend
