The Pitch:
Serial killer preacher!
A murderous scam-artist preacher terrorizes two
children who know where their father hid a fortune from a bank robbery.
The Night of the
Hunter is a hard movie to place. It isn't like many other horror movies of its
time. The 50s are more known for Sci-Fi or B-movie horror. Hunter is
darker and more grounded. The threat is very real. A smooth-talking devil kills
and cons his way to get what he wants. It's legitimately scary in a way that I
have trouble finding before the early 70s. There's no attempt to de-fang Roberr
Mitchum's character. He has the now iconic "Love: and "Hate"
tattooed on his knuckles. He kills indiscriminately. The way he announces his
presence by singing "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" is legitimately
creepy. Reverend Harry Powell is one of my favorite movie villains now.
I really need to see this movie again to have more to say about it, and I'm certain to see it again.
Verdict: Strongly Recommend
